Thame Show and street fair

A three-day street fair and the country's largest one-day agricultural show descend on Thame this month to provide day and night entertainment.

It was in 1888 that the first official 'Thame Show' took place, with its origins dating back even further to a ploughing match in 1855. Now it attracts over 20,000 people each year, is particularly popular with families and has recently been granted 'county' status.

This year, the 118-year-old show is on Thursday 21st September at the town's showground. Events take place in and around five show rings and include working and domestic animal competitions, a show jumping grand prix, a sheep dog display involving ducks and a chicken, classic cars and terrier racing.

Other highlights include 'Moto Stunts, the band of The Parachute Regiment, a display of new and vintage machinery, a country pursuits arena featuring the world fly fishing champion Hywel Morgan and the Kennel Club 'premier status' dog section, in which best of breed winners will qualify for Crufts.

Tickets can be brought in advance or on the day, priced at £11 for adults and £8 for children and senior citizens. A family ticket is available by advance booking only, admitting two adults and three children.

For further entertainment in the evening or during the weekend, Thame's annual street fair takes place in the High Street from Thursday 21st to Saturday 23rd September.
