Nature's helping handSpending time in the natural environment can improve health - so get on your bike or find some walking boots! Recent research commissioned by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), has revealed that time spent in the natural environment helps to promote a positive outlook on life and enhances our ability to cope with, and recover from, stress illness and injury. The research also found that varied and wildlife rich natural environments are most effective in promoting a sociable walking. It comes as no surprise therefore, that today's so popular 'health walks', were actually born in South Oxfordshire 11 years ago. It is clear to see why South Oxfordshire was the chosen location. Brimming with beautiful scenery, inspiring landscapes and acres of rolling countryside, the area features the River Thames, the Chilterns area of outstanding natural beauty, The Thames Path, The Ridgeway National Trail and The Phoenix Trail, all offering plentiful opportunities for walking, cycling, boating or simply sitting and admiring the views. This weekend, why not take an open top horse and cart ride from Nettlebed to Warburg nature reserve in Henley and enjoy the autumn colours and wildlife along the way? On Sunday, join a National Trails volunteer who will be leading a circular walk along the Thames Path from Wallingford, visiting highlights such as Dorchester and returning via Day's Lock and the Wittenham Clumps.
